A “high Tech” kerosene fired Rail Road Signal Lamp.  Note the slight notch in the handle.  This was practical and essential as it served as a “thumb catch” to assist in swinging the lantern.   Lanterns with the name of a rail road on them are more valuable.  This is a New York Central Rail Road lantern.
