1992: Veterans Memorial

In 1989, members of The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Brookfield Post 10201, began a campaign to erect a memorial at the entrance to William’s Park that would forever honor the Town’s Veterans. In 1992 after an effort that was expanded to include Town residents, the Town’s Parks and Recreation Department, and many generous local contractors, the project was completed. In November 1992 the memorial was “dedicated to the men and women of Brookfield who served in our Country’s Armed Services in defense of our freedom”.

Over the years the Memorial has been expanded to honor Francis A. Azzarito and Christopher Gerow Cocks, both of whom lost their lives while serving in our Armed Services. A plaque memorializing those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 was added shortly after that horrific event.

Memorial Bricks have been set in place causing us to pause and remember the conflicts our Nation has endured. Each branch of the United States Armed Services including Brookfield’s contribution to State Militia involved in both our Nation’s War of Independence and the American Civil War is represented. Inscribed on many of the remaining bricks is the name of a Veteran.

The monument is maintained by Post Members, the Parks and Recreation Department, and the Brookfield Garden Club.
