Twenty selected civil war maps prepared by the U.S. Department of Commerce Coast and Geodetic Survey, reproduced from originals made by the U.S. Coast Survey 1861 to 1865:
Manassas Junction and Vicinity – 1862 – Prepared prior and used during the 2nd Battle of Bull Run.
Charleston Harbor – Prepared after the city was evacuated on February 17, 1865 to help clear the harbor of mines, etc.
South Carolina and Georgia Coast – 1861 – 1862
Virginia Peninsula – 1864 – Includes Petersburg and Richmond and was prepared in preparation for the “siege”.
City of Richmond – 1864 – The map was prepared prior to occupation.
Mississippi River – 1862 – Used by Admiral Farragut at New Orleans on April 25, 1862.
Fort Jackson – 1862 – Prepared after the fort was taken showing the damage resulting from the six-day bombardment.
Fort Hindman, Arkansas – 1863 – Prepared after the fort was taken.
Approaches to Vicksburg – 1863 – Prepared prior, during, and after Union ships passed by Confederate batteries on May 2, 1863.
Approach to Grand Gulf – 1864 – Used to help Union forces in their attempt to stop guerrilla parties raiding the area.
Battleground of Sabine Cross Roads and Pleasant Hill – 1864 – Shows the battle plans of the failed Union advance into Texas.
Chattanooga and its Approaches – 1863 – Prepared before, during, and after the November 23 – 25, 1863 battle
Battle Field of Chickamauga – 1864 – Prepared after the September 19 – 20, 1863 battle.
Approach to Atlanta from Chattanooga – 1864 – Prepared in Washington D.C. using intelligence data obtained during Sherman’s movement.
Plan of Final Attack on Fort Fisher – 1865 – Prepared prior to the attack made on January 15, 1865.
Reconnaissance of Wilmington River – 1864 – Prepared in the event that sea support was required by General Sherman during his “March to the Sea”.
